Micro5 by Chiron – innovative technology, awarded in France with the » Micron d'or «

9th October 2024

The international trade fair for precision and microtechnology, Micronora in Besançon, is where the world meets that focuses on the micron, the thousandth of a millimeter. The Chiron Group's Micro5 made its first appearance there, convinced the jury in the machine and equipment category and was awarded the »Micron d'or« (Golden Micron).

Let's turn back the clock for a moment - in 2017 began the development of a machine that was designed for the size and required precision of very small workpieces. According to the motto: Why should we continue to manufacture high-precision components measuring just a few centimeters on machines that are essentially oversized in terms of footprint, mass and energy requirements? From the pur idea to three prototypes that had to prove themselves in daily Swiss working practice over several years, seven years later the idea has become a product manufactured in series by the Chiron Group, opening up new perspectives for the watch and jewelry industry for process-reliable, economical and sustainable production of highly precise parts.

In the application for the »Micron d’or« award, Andreas Lorenz, Product Manager Chiron France, and Samuel Vuadens, co-founder of the Micro5, presented the machine in all its details. The technical data such as 60 tool places, spindle speeds of up to 60,000 min-1, sophisticated automation solutions with robot cell Feed5 and AGVs (autonomous guided vehicles) meet all the requirements of micro-machining. The fact that high-tech can also be designed and made sustainably in a resource-saving manner is demonstrated by the minimal power consumption of just 0.5 to 1.5 kW/h (depending on the application) and the small space requirement of a Micro5 resp. Feed5 of just 1550 in2 - extreme energy efficiency and minimal footprint were certainly further convincing advantages for the jury in favor of the award.

Fabrice Belin, Managing Director of Chiron France, sums up the advantages of the Micro5 series as follows: "With the modular design principle of the Micro5, users can make their micro-part production resource-efficient, ultra-precise, autonomous and scalable - in Switzerland, around 100 Micro5s are currently successfully machining high-precision components for the watch and jewelry industry, and a growing proportion are also being used in medical technology." As far as the future of the Micro5 in France is concerned, Belin sees good prospects: "In France, which in the micro-machining now is for the Micro5 the second most important market, there will already be over a douzend machines in the field by the end of this year. And our micro-machining team is working on new solutions in other industries with good prospects of success.
