We are one – Sustainability report of the CHIRON Group 2023

26th July 2024

The very title of the CHIRON Group's Sustainability Report 2023, "We are one", emphasizes that sustainability activities are to be further strengthened worldwide. The report focuses on the international locations and on the emission reduction measures and targets in accordance with the Science Based Target Initiative (SBTi). The CHIRON Group's sustainability strategy remains unchanged: Economic performance remains a prerequisite for achieving sustainability targets.

Sustainable and climate-conscious action is of crucial importance to the CHIRON Group beyond maintaining economic performance. Since 2021, it has voluntarily reported annually on its activities in all relevant sustainability areas. The current report provides data on previous successes in the area of emissions reduction in Scope 1 and 2, focuses on future key topics such as the reduction measures in Scope 3 and shows that economic performance and sustainability go hand in hand in the long term.

A milestone was reached in May 2024. The CHIRON Group's planned emission reduction measures and targets, which were worked on intensively in 2023, were approved and confirmed by the Science Based Target Initiative (SBTi). "For 2023, our focus was clearly on the Science Based Targets Initiative. We are developing ambitious targets and measures along the 1.5-degree target to significantly reduce our emissions in the future," explains Benjamin Kurth, Global Program Manager Sustainability.

The wording of the official confirmation reads: "CHIRON Group SE commits to reduce absolute Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 50% by 2028, starting from the base year 2018. CHIRON Group SE also commits to reduce absolute Scope 3 GHG emissions by 25% within the same timeframe."

For Dr. Claus Eppler, CTO of the CHIRON Group and responsible for sustainability, the goals achieved so far are confirmation that we are on the right track: "With the "Sustainability@CHIRON Group" program, we have created a foundation that makes sustainability a strategic aspect of our business model for our company and for our customers. The activities focus on our products, such as our energy- and space-saving Micro 5 micromachining center, which already enable users to manufacture in a way that conserves resources and increases productivity. In the future, we will all be looking for a more sustainable and competitive performance of our products. And we can only make this transformation a success together."
