New SmartLine modules from the CHIRON Group create real added value in production
With the ProtectLine software solution, a digital twin always runs ahead of the physical machine in real time in every operating mode. In the case of a crash, the machining center is stopped in a controlled manner and thus preventively protects against collisions. Large and cost-intensive machine damage and production downtimes can be reliably avoided with ProtectLine.

ProtectLine and CutLine are the latest software solutions for digital production from the CHIRON Group and were introduced during the virtual OPEN HOUSE ONLINE exhibition from May 14 to 19. Both modules form part of the SmartLine portfolio with which the CHIRON Group has assumed a leading position on the market. The digital products are perfectly harmonized and create real added value for machining centers: They make it possible to increase productivity, improve part quality and boost availability.
ProtectLine: Preventive protection in ongoing production
The ProtectLine software allows companies to reliably prevent potentially significant, expensive damage and production downtimes. ProtectLine is characterized by a digital twin which runs ahead of the physical machine in real time during any operating mode. Should this digital twin crash, the software shuts down the machine in a controlled manner and thereby preventively protects it from collisions. One of the main features that sets this software solution from the CHIRON Group apart from other established systems on the market is the fact that the simulated models always correspond to the real current production situation. Machine crashes can be reliably prevented even in case of small adjustments or operating errors. In this way, the solution contributes to a significant improvement in productivity. Another advantage is that ProtectLine is integrated directly on the new TouchLine control panel, which makes operation very simple thanks to its intuitive and context-sensitive operating concept.
Digital process chain
ProtectLine fully replicates the physical machine: All machining tools including tool holders as well as the workpiece with clamping arrangement are part of the model. Just like a real machine, the software enables virtual tool changes and simulates a virtual machining process in parallel to the real machining process, for example.
Due to this unique removal simulation, the geometry of the virtual workpiece always corresponds to that of the real workpiece, resulting in a very realistic model.
Used together, the ProcessLine and ProtectLine modules of the SmartLine portfolio form an integrated digital process chain. Whereas ProcessLine simulates the real NC program in a preparatory stage, ProtectLine provides reliable protection against the consequences of operating errors in ongoing operation.
CutLine: Maximum efficiency in production
The latest addition to the SmartLine portfolio from the CHIRON Group is the module CutLine. The new software solution, which was introduced during the OPEN HOUSE ONLINE, makes it possible to significantly increase productivity through optimized feed speeds as a function of the spindle load. The fully automated software for the adaptive control of the machining center continuously monitors the machine's spindle load in real time. In doing so, it automatically optimizes the feed speed during each new work step. This significantly reduces the total cycle time. An additional advantage is that no elaborate manual NC program adjustments are required at any time.
Reliably prevent tool breakage
The new application aims to always achieve the maximum possible utilization for the cutting tool and workpiece material used based on increased feed speeds. In this way, an acceleration effect of up to 12 percent per produced workpiece can be achieved with CutLine. The software solution ensures that the machining center always runs at optimum capacity. If it detects spindle overloading, it automatically reduces the feed speed again, resulting in a longer service life for tools. If the current machining conditions allow for a faster feed speed, it is immediately increased again in order to always achieve maximum efficiency in production. A single trial run on a machining center is usually all it takes for CutLine to record the spindle load during the individual machining steps. The SmartLine module can be set up in next to no time and is available for all machining centers with a Siemens control system.
